I would be lying if I said I wasn’t attracted by the author’s Lord of the Rings name, thankfully, I also loved the book. The Snow Child is based on a Russian folktale and is set in Alaska in the 1920s. Jack and Mabel have moved to this beautiful but harsh place to escape their grief at losing a child. One evening, in a rare moment of joy, they make a child out of snow. I loved the setting, the characters are well rounded – sympathetic, lively, fun, struggling. Touching, atmospheric and a little bit magical, The Snow Child is a lovely read.
