I love Bruce Whatley’s illustrations! The perfect blend of colours to depict the beauty of flames and the devastation left behind a bushfire ending with the tiniest of green sprouting from the blackened environment. The whiteness of a cockatoo is gradually smudged as it desperately rides the drafts caused by the ferocious flames. This book spans many ages – with your help pre-schoolers will learn the power of images; in the rhyming text students will sense the urgency of the flight from danger contrasting with the courage of firefighters heading into danger; and adults will be immersed in this typically Australian story. Coupled with the mastery of Jackie French’s text this book earned a well-deserved place on the 2015 Children’s Book Council’s Book Week nominations.
