This was a surprising read and I ended up enjoying this story very much. The story is told mainly from a child’s perspective – a child trying to make sense of the adults and world around her. This results in the story being told in such a unique way.
Kitty is an evacuee from London during World War II and is placed in a rural English village. There is a mystery surrounding the couple she is placed with. They do not give Kitty a warm welcome. The reason for their cold behaviour towards Kitty, each other and those in the village is revealed throughout the story. This could have been a very dismal story but Kitty’s interpretation brought humour and warmth.
